From lush meadows through barren karst up to theSäntis
Hiking tip to the Berggasthaus Tierwis (mountain inn).
Important: Herd protection dogs are in use on the Oberhofeld Alp. The route is therefore closed. Hike to the Tierwis mountain inn from Schwägalp on the normal route.
This tour starts on Schwägalp and begins on the theme trail of the Schwägalp Säntis Nature Adventure Park. Initially, you hike downhill through meadows, alpine pastures and short sections of forest until the route slowly but steadily ascends and takes you above the tree line. Suddenly and surprisingly, you find yourself in the middle of the barren alpine world. With the Gamschopf and the striking Stooss in view, the route now ascends more steeply along the north face. The mountain trail over the Stosssattel is also very attractive because of the view. Shortly after the saddle, don't miss the turn-off to the Silberplatten. You must have climbed this wonderful and little-travelled summit. Back on the main trail, you hike through fascinating karst terrain to the Tierwis mountain inn. Stop for a bite to eat and enjoy the view of Toggenburg and Appenzellerland. Now the last stage lies ahead of you: Pass the second support of the Säntis suspension railway and pass under the suspension railway cables on your way up to the Girensattel. After a short traverse, the final highlight follows, as you reach the summit of the Säntis via the "Himmelsleiter". The Säntis railway takes you back down to the valley in comfort.
