The Way of the Cross
Stations of the Cross: Lehmen – Blacken – Ahorn.
This trail follows the Blacken-Ahorn Way of the Cross with its 15 stations. This modern pilgrimage route was established in 1991 to commemorate the 700th anniversary of the Swiss Confederation by the Catholic parishes of the two Appenzells. Back in the early days of the church, believers made pilgrimages from Jerusalem up to Golgotha following in Jesus’ footsteps. Others who were unable to make the voyage to the Holy Land also had to participate in the Way of the Cross. For this reason Stations of the Cross were built throughout Christendom and offered a source of hope for believers.
Walking the Stations of the Cross makes one appreciate the many people – perhaps you or your nearest and dearest – who today must walk their own path of sorrow and pain. They should all be remembered in our prayers.
You reach Ahorn in a contemplative mood but in good spirits. Here you will find the Maria Pilgrimage Chapel where you can enjoy a moment of peace and quiet.
