Funkensonntag in Appenzell und Weissbad
Every year on the third Sunday before Easter, in Appenzell and in various villages around the cantonal capital, large bonfires are piled up and lit to drive away winter. At the top of the woodpile is the spark babe made of fireworks, which personifies winter. This custom is extremely popular with children and young people and will delight every fire enthusiast. By the way, Sparkensonntag is practised in a particularly impressive way in Ried (a former poor quarter) near the Freudenberg restaurant in Appenzell.
